Three Days in Mindelo, the Soul of Cape Verde

Some places you visit. Mindelo you feel. On the island of São Vicente, Cape Verde's cultural capital wakes slowly, to a guitar drifting from an open window and the smell of fresh grogue on the breeze. This is a city that lives for music, colour and conversation, and three days here is the perfect way to begin a Cape Verde journey.

Day one: settle into the rhythm

Start where locals do, along the seafront. Wander the pastel streets around the Praça Nova, watch the boats come in at the fish market, and let the afternoon slip by on a café terrace. As the sun goes down, follow the music to a bar in Ribeira Bote, where morna and coladeira are played the way Cesária Évora sang them.

Day two: cross to Santo Antão

A short ferry ride away, Santo Antão rises out of the ocean in ridges of green. This is Cape Verde's hiking heart, where trails wind past terraced valleys, sugar-cane fields and villages that feel untouched by time. Go with someone who knows both the paths and the people.

Day three: slow down

Back in Mindelo, spend your last day the local way. Browse the craft stalls, share a plate of cachupa, and end where you began, by the water, with live music and no particular plan. That, more than any monument, is the soul of the city.
