When to Travel: A Season Guide to East Africa

East Africa has no bad season, only seasons that suit different journeys. The question is never really "when is it nice", it is "what do I want to be doing". Here is how the year falls for Zanzibar, Kenya and the coast in between, and which months we would pick for what.

June to October: the safe bet

If you can only travel once and want the odds in your favour, this is the window. The long rains are over, the air is dry, the sea is calm and visibility on the reefs is at its best. Inland, the grass is low and the animals gather around what water is left, which is exactly why wildlife viewing is easiest now. In the Maasai Mara, the great migration herds are usually in the north from around July to October, though nature keeps its own diary and no one can promise a date.

The trade-off is that everyone else knows this too. Lodges fill early, and the best small properties are often booked six months ahead.

December to February: warm, bright, and busy at the turn of the year

The short rains have passed and the islands are at their most inviting: hot, clear, perfect for slow beach days in Kendwa or Jambiani. Inland it is dry again and the calving season brings newborns onto the plains, which in turn brings predators. Birdwatching is at its best, with migratory species wintering here.

Two things to know. Christmas and New Year are the busiest and priciest fortnight of the whole year on the coast, so book well ahead or travel in mid-January instead. And it is genuinely hot, which is lovely by the sea and demanding in the middle of the day inland.

March to May: the long rains

This is the quiet season, and it is quiet for a reason. Rain comes in heavy afternoon bursts rather than all day, but roads soften, some coastal lodges close for maintenance, and the sea can be churned up. April and May are the months we most often steer people away from for a first journey.

They are also the months when the landscape is greenest, prices are lowest and you can have a beach to yourself. If you have travelled to the region before and want it without the crowds, this is your window. Just build flexibility into the plan.

November: the short rains

Short, scattered showers, often in the late afternoon, and long stretches of sun around them. November is an underrated month: the light is beautiful, the crowds have not arrived and rates are still reasonable. It is a good compromise if your dates are fixed by school or work.

One thing holds in every month: Stone Town rewards a slow morning on foot, and it is where the island's history is told plainly rather than prettily.

So, when?

For a first journey combining beaches and wildlife, June to October. For a warm winter escape from the northern hemisphere, January and February. For green landscapes, low prices and solitude, March or November, with a flexible itinerary.
