This Departure
Before You Join This Group
Yes, and the dates were chosen for it. Carnival season runs from early January to Ash Wednesday, and this departure sits on its last week: Dimanche Gras on 7 February, Lundi Gras on 8 February in Basse-Terre, Mardi Gras on 9 February in Pointe-à-Pitre. The island stops for those days, and the itinerary follows the island.
It is a hike rather than a climb: a marked path through cloud forest to the 1,467 metre summit, steep in places. No technical experience is needed, but walking shoes and a waterproof layer are, because the top is wet and windy even on a clear morning at sea level. The afternoon that follows is free, so the day is not a race.
Most of it, and three moments deliberately not: the afternoon after La Soufrière, part of Lundi Gras which you follow at your own pace, and free time in Sainte-Anne near the end. Breakfast is daily, three lunches are included on days 3, 5 and 6, and two dinners open and close the journey. The rest of the table is yours to choose.
February falls in the carême, the dry season: warm and breezy, usually 24 to 29 degrees, with the heights of Basse-Terre cooler and wetter than the coast. It is the most comfortable month on the island, which is also why it fills early.
Guadeloupe is a French overseas department and is not part of the Schengen area, so Schengen entry rules do not apply here. Canadian passport holders travel without a visa for stays up to 90 days, with a passport valid at least three months beyond the return. Other nationalities differ, and we confirm yours in writing before you book.
